Gierowski Stefan

A painter and graphic designer.
He was born in 1925 in Częstochowa. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow at Zbigniwe Pronaszka’s, Karol Frycz’s and Władysław Jarocki’s ateliers as well as the history of art at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. After graduation he was looking for his own artistic path, which made the influence of cubism noticeable in his paintings. The middle of the 1950s becomes a borderline in his work as he abandons figurative art in that time concentrating on color, form and a subject matter of a painting. He deprives paintings of the semantic context and assumes the word “picture” and a Roman numeral as a title (Painting no. I was created in 1957). He claims that this is necessary to maintain detachment from your own intentions and concentrate on the canvas as a medium of the painting itself. In other series he studies tensions between the color and the inner structure of the painting. Gierowki regularly takes part in exhibition in Poland and abroad since 1955. At the turn of the 1950s and 1960s he cooperates with the Crooked Circle Gallery. He was awarded Jan Cybis prize.
