A painter, direktor, stage designer and graphic artis
He was born on the 6th of April 1915 in Wieliopol Skrzyński, died on the 8th of December 1990 in Cracow. He was a graduate and a professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. In 1945 he was the co-founder and a member of the Cracow Group. During occupation he organized an experimental underground theatre and in 1956 the Cricot Theatre which he ran till the end of his life. He was the greatest representative of the Cracow artistic avant-garde and after the Second World War one of the leading contemporary Polish artists. He went in for abstract painting, mainly informel, as well as drawing and graphic arts. After 1960 he created assemblages – arrangements of objects attached to paintings and deprived of their typical functions (e.g. umbrellas).
